Terribly sad story. Rebecca was apparently abused as a child, if the story is true, and she took her abuser to court, but he was acquitted. Rebecca degenerated after that point. She was apparently then accused of making the story up by a neighbour and Rebecca stabbed the person and then went to jail for assault. Rebecca should never have retaliated, but if she was abused, she should have received extensive therapy too. Now she's killed a person, which is inexcusable. But it also sounds as if she is mentally ill, because most of her "dangerous" behaviour is towards herself, in self harm, which is a cry for help. At the least, she should be admitted to a psychiatric institution, she shouldn't be in jail.

  2. Thanks for the feedback!
If what she said is true and her abuser did get off then she must be carrying loads of anger and frustration inside her!
As you say..she needs long term therapy and other mental health treatment and prison is not the place to get it!
Hopefully some activists will take up her case and put pressure on the responsible authorities to change the status quo!

  3. I knew Rebecca butter field in 1997 and visited her at Emu plains correctional centre the day she stabbed to death another inmate . I witnessed Rebecca set herself on fire at mulawa correctional centre . Rebecca has been treated tormented like an animal . Prior to her incarceration she had been a victim of abuse, once she entered the prison system she was re traumatised by staff, other inmates. I truly believe had Rebecca received therapy and care she would never have murdered another inmate. The failure of Rebecca's life belongs to the dept of corrective services and the judicial system which has continually failed her . I hope that Rebecca s next 5 years will be spent in treating her like a human not a tortured animal

Thanx for bringing this info to our attention.

Hopefully others will join me in praying that God will send her peace of mind in a very hostile environment.

I am considering writing to her for what it's worth and hopefully she will be allowed to receive my letter.

Keep her in there. I don't care if she's been abused. That is certainly not an excuse for what she's done. She should never be let out. I don't give a damn if she's in prison or in a psychiatric hospital. Imagine meeting her and, unknowingly, setting her off. Really, you bleeding hearts should go and stay in her cell with her. If you walk out of there unharmed then you can preach to others.

Lately there has been an uptick in visits to Rebecca Butterfield's page on my blog. Today I investigated and found that she features in a book about Australian prisons and prisoners.
I don't know if what has been written is all true seeing as sensation rakes in cash. Maybe the author will consider sending 10% of his profits to Rebecca in a good faith gesture ^^

I don't care how much you're abused as a child, I copped the brutal lot daily - physical, sexual & mental and all at the hands of those entrusted to nurture, not destroy.
Different people react differently, of course, but there is NO EXCUSE for ending up like this woman, clearly she is mentally deranged and should be treated as such in a secure institution for life.

NSW criminal justice system has failed Rebecca and then those who were harmed. Options for support for victims seems only to be an advertisment for donors than an authentic service. Just look at the results.
